Police Arrest Suspect After Two Suspicious Apartment Fires

EPD

Authorities are investigating two suspicious apartment fires in Evansville.

Evansville Police say officers arrested Randall Eugene James less than 12 hours after the two fires.

Firefighters were dispatched to Grandview Tower on Fulton Parkway, off Diamond Avenue, just before 4:30 a.m. Friday.

An occupant of a 5th floor apartment told 911 dispatchers she had a fire outside of her front door.

Crews arrived to find sprinklers activated and smoke in the hallway.

In a press release, EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said the sprinkler system contained the flames.

No injuries were reported, but water damaged several floors and apartments.

The Red Cross was called in to help 8-to-10 displaced residents.

Less than 15 minutes after the fire was reported at Grandview, firefighters were called to 2501 Old Bridge Court, in the Crossing Apartments, a few blocks away.

Larson said an occupant woke to the sound of a smoke detector and saw fire at the door.

Occupants threw water on the flames from inside the apartment then exited through a patio door.

The EPD says Randall James is suspected of starting both fires.

His ex-wife lives in Grandview Tower. Her mother lives in the Crossing Apartments.
