Fire Destroys Former Food Mart

EFD

An emergency raze order has been requested after fire destroyed a former neighborhood market in Evansville early Wednesday.

Firefighters were dispatched to the closed Charlie’s Food Mart at 1400 N. Main at about 3:20 a.m.

In a release, EFD Division Chief Mike Larson said crews moved into and through the building, trying to access the fire for about 20 minutes.

Larson said the fire was difficult to reach due to multiple ceilings and roofs.

Firefighters eventually had to evacuate the building and battle the flames from outside.

Larson said the building was vacant and secure with no utilities.

No injuries were reported.

Larson said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Before it was a market, the building at Main and Tennessee housed a barbecue restaurant.
