A possible highway connecting William H. Natcher Bridge and Interstate 69 is in the initial study phase, and officials are asking for public input.
The Mid-States Corridor, billed as an "improved highway connection," would start at Rockport, go near or through the towns of Hungtingburg and Jasper, and then connect with the interstate either directly or via State Road 37.
Mid-State Corridor spokesperson Mindy Peterson says it's still very early in the process, but the team is looking into several possible routes.
"This study is taking a conversation that has been underway for a number of years now by local officials and really moving it to action," she says.
Open houses will allow members of the public to chat with the project team and voice their thoughts. Each will start at 5:30 p.m. EST with a brief presentation planned for 6 p.m. EST.
The following public meetings are scheduled:
- Monday, August 5, Washington High School, 608 E. Walnut St., Washington, Indiana
- Tuesday, August 6, Springs Valley High School, 326 S. Larry Bird Blvd., French Lick, Indiana
- Thursday, August 8, Jasper High School, 1600 St. Charles St., Jasper, Indiana
An office for the project team will open Monday in the Administration Building at Vincennes University. The public can visit Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during regular business hours or via appointment to learn more about the project.
You can also find more information or provide your input by visiting the project's website, calling 812-482-3116, or sending an email to info@midstatescorridor.com.
The project team plans to announce a preferred route next summer with the release of a draft environmental impact statement. A final decision would come from the federal government the following year.
The study will cost around $6.5 million. The project would be funded by the Mid-States Corridor Regional Development Authority, which receives private money along with support from local government agencies.
