In At-Large Primary Races, More Winners Than Losers

In November, three Republicans and three Democrats will compete for three at-large seats on Evansville's city council.

Each party fielded a slightly larger slate of candidates, which voters had to trim down Tuesday.

Democrats Kaitlin Moore Morley, Gina Robinson Ungar, and Jonathan Weaver are moving on to the November ballot.

Ed Bassemier and Mike Talarzyk didn’t make the cut after unofficial election results came in Tuesday.

Jonathan Weaver, the only incumbent in that race, says the Democrats are approaching the November election as a united front.

"This is what our party’s been lacking the last couple years, unity," Weaver says. "I think we reinstituted that tonight, and we should be a driving force come November."

On the Republican ticket, Alex Schmitt, Ron Beane, and David Christmas will head to the general election, beating out Zane Clodfelter.

Christmas says he’s excited. "I also know there’s a lot of work to be done so there’s a little bit of reality setting in as well," he says.

Evansville mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the Republicans have a strong slate of candidates in city council races this year.

"It’s a 5-4 Democrat controlled council now," he says. "I think we have a very good chance to take control of it in the fall."

But Winnecke, who’s also up for reelection, says he’ll work with whoever wins to make the city better.
