AP Honors Community for 2018 Local News Coverage

Community support for high quality, local journalism has once again been recognized in a significant way. Last Saturday, WNIN received seven first place awards and three second place awards from the Indiana Associated Press Broadcasters at ceremonies in Indianapolis.

For the fourth time in the past five years, WNIN was named the Outstanding Radio News Operation in the Metro Division for our coverage of the community in 2018.  In making the award, the judges said, "The work from this station is ambitious, versatile and simply impressive. The news team clearly embraces the community and is offering many ways to experience content. Nicely done."

WNIN reporter Isaiah Seibert received a second place award in the Best Reporter Cateogory. They took an unusual step for the second place winner by commenting on the entry. "This up-and-coming reporter clearly is building skill quickly. Good scriptwriting and solid web treatments as well."

Isaiah took first place for the story he broke in 2018 regarding a federal lawsuit of racial and sexual harassment. Isaiah also took first place for his breaking news coverage of the train derailment and explosion in Princeton last June. For the lawsuit coverage, the judges commented, "Excellent continuous coverage that yielded results. The kind of story that would have been swept under the rug if WNIN was not on it."

Our coverage of the local World War I story of Chester and Gertrude Schulz received two first place awards in the categories of Best News Series and Best Public Affairs program. The judge's comments: "A moving and ambitious project. The research and extraordinary effort to retrace history and capture scene and voices was impressive."

WNIN also received a first place award for the best long-form newscast.

The community was also recognized for training the next generation of journalists. Our 2018 summer intern, Emily Miles, received the first place award as best student reporter for all radio divisions. The judges said, "What impressive work from this student. Reporting, production and presentation in the Evansville piece was excellent, capturing voices from many perspectives and connecting them with ease. Well done."

We want to thank the community for your support that makes this kind of recognition possible.
