Lemonade Stand Draws Attention To Wage Gap

A lemonade stand popped-up on Evansville’s Main Street Tuesday, and it charged men more than women.

Male politicians, business leaders, and athletes donned red aprons and sold cups of lemonade during the lunch hour.

The YWCA organized the Equal Pay Day event, and CEO Erica Taylor told WNIN about the cost difference…

"We're charging men a dollar and women 75 cents to kind of you know, demonstrate that women do get a discount on their wages so we're going to give them a discount on their lemonade as well."

April 2nd is considered the day women catch up with men’s pay for the previous year.

Nationwide, the gap has improved to about 80 cents to one dollar. In Indiana, it’s just 73-cents per dollar.

Taylor said it’s not only a women’s issue, but a family issue…

"Women are co- or primary bread winners in many families in our nation, and when women aren't being paid fair pay for fair work it hurts the family."

Taylor admits the lemonade stand is a “cheeky” way to make the point…

"You know it's just a fun way, we're on Main St.. it's the lunch hour, people are out and about, and they may buy a cup of lemonade, they may not, but we're able to them them about the wage gap, give them some information."

Taylor says at the current rate, women won’t see pay equality until 2059.
