Vectren has received state approval to build a 50-megawatt solar farm in Spencer County.
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved the plan for the solar array that will fill about 300 acres and house nearly 150,000 solar panels.
The company says the approval is a step toward Vectren’s plan of lowering carbon emissions by 60% over 2005 levels by 2024.
In a news release, Vectren’s Lynnae Wilson calls the solar farm “significant” and said it will be among the “largest single-sited solar farms in the state.”
Wilson said it will serve Vectren customers for “decades to come.”
The solar farm is expected to be up and running in the fall of 2020.
Vectren – which was recently purchased by CenterPoint Energy – says the solar array will be capable of generating enough power to support more than 12,000 households a year.
Construction is expected to begin later this year.
