The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana is celebrating its new location in Downtown Evansville.

The new gallery at 212 Main St. was packed for the grand opening Friday night, forcing Executive Director Ann McKim to shout for the crowd’s attention…

"Welcome, hello!"

McKim told the crowd she’s been anticipating the opening for 16 months and thanked the community.

Arts Council Board Chairman Joshua Armstrong said people had urged the council to stay on Main St….

"So, we were really lucky to find this space. I'm very proud today to welcome you to this beautiful contemporary space that we know will quickly become the hub of arts and culture in Downtown Evansville."

The council previously shared a space with Innovation Point in the 300 block of Main.

The new long, narrow space once housed a fur store, and more recently it was the Christian Science Reading Room.

It also features an event space on its roof.

The gallery is currently showcasing local artists.

The council also received financial help from Indiana Regional Cities.
