Man To Face Charges In Deadly Multi-vehicle Crash

An Evansville woman is dead following a crash involving a man suspected of driving while high on meth and pot.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office identifies the victim as 72-year-old Darla Smith of Evansville.

She died at Deaconess Midtown Hospital after the multi-vehicle crash on First Avenue, just north of Diamond, just before 9:00 Tuesday morning.

Witnesses told Evansville Police that an impaired driver, identified as 54-year-old William Buckman, drove northbound into the southbound lanes, collided with Smith’s vehicle, and pushed it into two more cars.

Police say Buckman was taken to a hospital where he tested positive for methamphetamine and THC – the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

He’s being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police say Buckman will face charges related to the crash when he’s released from the hospital.
