Central Dispatch Using Upgraded Radios

With the New Year comes a new radio system at Vanderburgh County Central Dispatch.

In an email, Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Cullum said the new Project 25 – or P25 -- radio system went online New Year’s Day.

The system replaces the Enhanced Digital Access Communication System – or EDACS -- used by Central Dispatch for many years.

Sgt. Cullum says it upgrades mobile and portable radios for all public safety agencies that use Vanderburgh County Central Dispatch.

If you want to monitor local police and fire broadcasts, you’ll need a P25 programmable scanner.

Such radios can be purchased online and at some local retailers.

The scanner has to be programmed to receive the local public service agencies.
