Experience Is Point Of Contention In Vanderburgh Co. Commissioner Debate

Jeff Hatfield, the Democratic candidate for the Vanderburgh County Board of Commissioners, criticized his opponent’s lack of private sector experience during a debate last night at WNIN.

Touting his own business experience, Hatfield said that Republican Mike Duckworth has held numerous positions throughout county departments.

"There’s no way that I can compete with that type of experience where you go from one department to the next," Hatfield said, "but that’s really not the type of experience I think a county commissioner needs."

Duckworth said those jobs aren’t the type you can get through nepotism. "Those are jobs you give to people that can get things done," he said.

Duckworth listed some of his accomplishments with the county highway department and the board of the Evansville-Vanderburgh-School Corporation.

"Experience in government is good," he added. "And I’m very proud of what I’ve done."

The two men are vying for the position currently held by Republican Bruce Ungethiem, who is running for a seat in the statehouse.

Correction: A previous version of this article mispelled Mike Duckworth's last name.
