Sheriff: Man Found in Road Fell Off ATV

Authorities say a man found at a Warrick County intersection died after falling off an ATV.

Emergency personnel found 39-year-old Mark Birge II of Chandler lying in the roadway at New Harmony and Inderrieden roads.

He had serious injuries to his head and upper torso.

An ambulance took Birge to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Evansville where he died Saturday afternoon.

Detectives with the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident, and determined that Birge had been riding ATVs in northern Warrick County with a group of friends and fell off the back of one driven by 40-year-old Chad Grigsby of Boonville.

An autopsy was performed Monday afternoon at the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office and investigators are awaiting the final results.

The sheriff’s office says Birge was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident and the case will be forwarded to the Warrick County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
