Two former church buildings in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Evansville have been deconsecrated.
Bishop of Evansville Joseph Siegel relegated St. John the Apostle Church and St. Theresa Church to profane but not sordid use Monday.
This means religious services can no longer be held in the buildings.
The parishes at both churches were subject to mergers in recent years, and the buildings were not being used for regular Sunday mass.
The bishop wrote in two decrees signed July 20 that upkeep of the facilities put financial strain on their parishes, and that parishioners seldom asked to use the churches for weddings or funerals.
A third church in the diocese, the Nativity of Our Lord, was deconsecrated at the end of July.
A diocesan spokesperson told WNIN he is not aware of any future plans for the sites.
