Evansville Regional Airport says new flights to a popular beach will eliminate a 10-hour drive.

Allegiant Air will add two weekly flights between Evansville and Destin, Florida, starting June 8th.

During a news conference at the airport, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke couldn’t resist mentioning the weather…

("When it's gray, windy, and 34 degrees, Destin sounds pretty good, doesn't it?")

Allegiant’s Courtney Goff said the flights offer an alternative to a long drive…

("It's a ten-hour drive down there, so you don't want to be in the car that long. It's a great hour-and-a-half flight all the way down there and with our business model you can pack as much or as little as you like, and customize your price the way you want it.")

Allegiant will use 177-seat jets for the flights to-and-from Destin Ft. Walton Beach Airport.

One-way flights begin at $61.

Executive Director of the Evansville Vanderburgh Airport Authority, Doug Joest, told reporters there’s no commitment from Allegiant to keep the flights beyond this summer…

("It's a function of the community using the service. If you don't use the air service you have, you're likely to lose it because they'll take the airplanes someplace where they can fill ‘em up.")

The airline said passengers began booking the flights within hours of the announcement on social media.
