Phone scammers continue to target local dentists.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office says it’s received multiple calls from victims reporting that a man identifying himself as a sheriff’s deputy threatens local dentists with arrest.
A news release from the sheriff’s office states the caller claims to have an arrest warrant because the dentist missed a court date.
The caller knows the correct name of the dentist, but doesn’t appear to possess any personally identifiable information.
The caller attempts to extort money from the victim to have the warrant recalled.
The sheriff’s office says victims in each case recognized the call was a scam and hung up.
The Sheriff's Office emphasizes it does not solicit the payment of fines or fees over the phone.
The scam was first reported last July, when the sheriff’s office notified the Indiana Dental Association.
