Officer and suspect in Henderson shooting ID'd

Authorities have released the identities of the Henderson police officer and the man he shot during a brief standoff.

Kentucky State Police say 29-year-old Henderson Police Officer Stuart Onan was the officer involved in the shooting early Monday morning. The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Troy Tapp

A news release from KSP says Tapp is still being treated at St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville in stable condition.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed Onan was trying to stop Tapp for a traffic violation when Tapp’s vehicle fled from the officer.

KSP said the fleeing vehicle stopped on MLK between Clay and South Adams, and Tapp got out with a shotgun.

During a brief standoff, police said Tapp took a stance which – quote -- “created a safety concern for the officer.”

Onan fired his gun at Tapp, striking him “multiple times in the abdomen.”

Onan was not injured.
