Volunteers to distribute smoke alarms

John Gibson

Volunteers will fan out across two Evansville neighborhoods this weekend to boost fire safety.

The American Red Cross, the Evansville Fire Department, and The Promise Zone have partnered in the Home Fire Campaign.

Theo Boots of the Red Cross says volunteers will meet at the C.K. Newsome Center at 8:45 Saturday morning to learn about delivering and installing smoke detectors in homes that need them.

She says after training, teams of two and three volunteers will canvas the Akin Park and Tepe Park neighborhoods.

Evansville Fire Chief Mike Connelly says the campaign focuses on low income areas, where residents may not be able to afford smoke alarms or they're unable to install them.

Connelly says when he first joined the Home Fire Campaign, about 30 percent of Evansville homes didn’t have working smoke detectors.

He says detectors also need to be replaced after ten years.

Officials say the campaign has saved at least 10 lives in Indiana.

If you’d like to volunteer for Saturday’s event, contact the American Red Cross.
