Officials celebrated a milestone in the construction of the IU medical school in Downtown Evansville.
Iron workers hoisted the final 30-foot beam to the top of the building Friday morning, completing the building’s structural frame.
Participants signed the beam before it was lifted into place, including Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, who joked he was "beaming today."
Winnecke publicly thanked the people who got the project to this point, the iron workers.
The mayor also looked forward, saying the med school will "educate a new pipeline of health care professionals that will help our city, state and region grow and become more vibrant."
Project Executive Barb Daum of Skanska told WNIN the top beam was raised on schedule. She said the project should wrap up in March or April 2018.
Baum says the next step is “pre-casting,” which involves a concrete slab structure and a glass curtain wall. The four-story facility on Walnut St. will house medical programs from IU, USI, and U of E.
