Police: potent K-2 causing spike in overdoses

Local police and paramedics are responding to more and more people overdosing on synthetic marijuana.

Police and medical crews say they responded to as many as 7 incidents Monday in which people were believed to have overdosed on the illegal substance known as K-2.

A news release from Evansville Police says it was the second time in as many weeks that crews provided medical attention to numerous people who appeared to have taken a very potent, dangerous batch of the drug.

Police say synthetic marijuana can cause paranoia, anxiety, and hallucinations much more severe than when smoking pot.

They say it can cause psychotic episodes, increased heart rate, vomiting, seizures, and uncontrollable body movements.

The release says the side effects make it difficult for users to make rational decisions and for police and paramedics to help them.

Anyone with information on where the batch of K-2 came from is urged to call the Joint Narcotics Task Force at 812-436-7917 or the We Tip line at 800-78-CRIME.
