Ozone Alert issued during last week of summer

The Evansville EPA is warning of possible unhealthy air Tuesday.

The local EPA has issued an Ozone Alert, with a forecast of bright sunshine and calm wind.

The agency says the combination may boost ozone levels into the “unhealthy” category, especially for sensitive groups like children, the elderly, persons with respiratory conditions, and anyone who is active outdoors for a prolonged period.

The EPA says ozone is most likely to reach unhealthy levels between noon and 7:00 p.m.

The agency is urging everyone to conserve energy, use public transportation, avoid unnecessary driving and idling, postpone fueling vehicles until the evening, and limit the use of cleaning fluids, paint thinners, or other materials containing volatile organic compounds.

The ozone alert comes just days before the official start of fall, when ozone pollution usually declines.
