The Evansville EPA has issued another Ozone Alert for this weekend.
The city has already violated federal ozone standards three times this month.
The new alert is in effect Saturday, Sunday, and Monday – the first day of summer.
Evansville EPA Director Jacob Keating tells WNIN that sunny and warm conditions -- with little or no wind -- may create unhealthy ozone levels for sensitive groups, like children, the elderly, and persons with lung or heart conditions.
He urges those groups to limit time outdoors, stay cool, and stay hydrated.
Keating says the city has already exceeded stricter federal ozone standards three times this season, on June 10th, 11th, and 13th. He says the federal EPA will assess the exceedances next year.
Keating says federal, state, and local officials need to discuss ways to keep communities "in attainment" with ozone standards.
For now, the EPA asks you to conserve energy, limit driving, postpone fueling vehicles until evening, limit the use of paint thinners and cleaning fluids containing volatile organic compounds, and don’t use gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on alert days.
