EPD: Video shows suspect wouldn't surrender in March shooting

Evansville Police have released video from a fatal police shooting.

Officers shot and killed 38-year-old Daniel Wootens, after he stole a police cruiser at knifepoint outside Eastland Mall in March.

Police Sgt. Jason Cullum shared with the news media some of what he says is the only police video of the pursuit and shooting on Morgan Avenue.

The video is from a body cam worn by Officer Jonathan Helm from inside his car. Helm was not among the three officers who fired eleven shots at Wootens after he crashed the stolen police car and got out, carrying a knife.

The video shows Wootens spreading his arms out, with the knife in one hand, and starting to move toward officers. Police stopped the video before the fatal shots were fired.

Cullum says officers told Wootens to drop the knife when he got out of the car, but it was difficult to detect the command in the video. Cullum says it’s clear Wootens was not trying to surrender.
