An Evansville man is formally charged with murder following a shootout at an East Side hotel.

40-year-old Baron Jerrell Lights has been charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery, criminal confinement, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police say Lights and 38-year-old Jerome Wilkins were armed with handguns when they tried to rob occupants of a hotel room at Home Life Studios, off Green River Road.

Police say one of the occupants was also armed, and all three men fired their guns. Wilkins and 32-year-old Jessy Suttle were wounded.

Wilkins was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Suttle was an occupant of the hotel room and was hospitalized.

Lights and Wilkins were reportedly trying to collect money owed to them. Both have criminal records.
