One dead, one wounded, one arrested in robbery attempt

Evansville Police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shootout at an East Side hotel.

Police arrested 40-year-old Baron Jerrell Lights on preliminary charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, burglary, and criminal confinement.

A news release from the EPD indicates Lights and 38-year-old Jerome Wilkins were armed with handguns when they tried to rob occupants of a hotel room at Home Life Studios, off Green River Road, at about 8:30 Thursday morning.

Police say one of the occupants was also armed, and all three men fired their guns. Wilkins and 32-year-old Jessy Suttle were wounded.

Wilkins was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Suttle was an occupant of the hotel room and is still hospitalized.

Police say they don’t know yet who fired the rounds that killed Wilkins.
