Cost of pedestrian bridges goes up

A pair of pedestrian overpasses in Downtown Evansville will cost more than expected.

The cost to build the bridges that will connect the new convention hotel to Old National Events Plaza and the Ford Center has increased from $3.2 million to $3.6 million.

But Metro Development Director Kelly Coures tells WNIN that the project is still within budget. He says more steel will be required for the bridges but it will be covered by a contingency fund.

The Redevelopment Commission unanimously approved the change order Tuesday.

Meantime, construction crews have erected steel and concrete, as the new Hilton Doubletree on Walnut Street takes shape. It’s expected to open in December and boost convention business in Evansville.
