Avian flu outbreak spreads in SW Indiana

WNIN is following developments in this story closely. Samantha Horton is in Dubois County Sunday and will file any updates as they become available.  Please tune to John Gibson for Morning Edition Monday for complete coverage.

An avian flu outbreak in Southwest Indiana has spread. Local, state and federal officials are now investigating the outbreak that has been confirmed at ten commercial turkey farms.

Indiana and federal officials are taking this new outbreak of avian flu seriously. According to Indiana officials, about 60,000 turkeys at the original commercial turkey farm have already been euthanized in an attempt to control the spread of the outbreak of H7N8 virus.

State officials confirm that over a dozen local, state and federal agencies are involved in controlling the outbreak. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security has activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the effort.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture incident response team is expected to arrive this weekend to lead the investigation and control response to the avian flu outbreak.
