Evansville Police have arrested a man accused of trying to shut off a surveillance camera to cover up a theft.
Authorities are thanking the public for contacting police after seeing surveillance photos that clearly showed a man’s face trying to disable a security camera inside the Treasures store at Washington Square Mall last week.
A news release from Evansville Police says officers arrested 42-year-old Matthew Klees after numerous people said they recognized him in the surveillance photos.
Police say Klees’s attempt to cut a wire to the camera provided the “best images” of him. He’s suspected of stealing a used laptop computer.
One of the tips notified authorities that Klees was inside the Barnes & Noble bookstore on Green River Road Tuesday afternoon, and police arrested him there.
Police say Klees wouldn’t speak to investigators after his arrest. He’s being held in the Vanderburgh County jail on a preliminary charge of theft.
