USI wins recycling contest over UE, Ivy Tech

The University of Southern Indiana is declared the winner of a friendly competition.

USI collected more aluminum cans than students at UE and Ivy Tech.

Students from all three Evansville campuses collected more than 200,000 pounds of cans for this year’s RecycleMania.

USI students collected the most aluminum on a per-capita basis.

The Alcoa Foundation sponsors the annual event, and spokesman Jim Beck tells WNIN aluminum is “infinitely recyclable.” He says a recycled soda can is back on store shelves within 60 days, or it may be used in your vehicle or airplane wings.

USI was awarded $1,500 for winning the competition, but the money was quickly donated to Keep Evansville Beautiful. Executive Director Julie Walsh says it will be used to drop fees, so non-profits can use recycle containers for events at no charge.

USI was second only to Notre Dame among eight Indiana schools that participated in the event.
