The Federal Building in downtown Evansville was evacuated Tues. due to a suspicious package found in the mail screening process.
The Evansville Police says the Hazardous Devices Unit was called to the federal building at 101 NW Martin Luther King Blvd around noon to investigate the package.
Employees of both the Federal Building and the Post Office were evacuated, and Vine St. from Martin Luther King Blvd. to 10th St. was closed off with police cars.
But a few hours later, the EPD announced the bomb tech determined the threat was a false alarm.
EPD Spokesperson Sgt. Jason Cullum said an unnamed Federal Building employee received an unexpected box of multiple battery packs.
"When you look at the stuff everyday and you see something different, it can look suspicious," Cullum said. "But they have determined the package was not sent with any ill will, it was actually sent to the employee for a specific reason, but he didn't realize someone had mailed it to him."
Employees returned to work around 2pm and Vine Street was reopened to traffic.
Around the same time, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis was also on lockdown Tues. Indianapolis Metro Police investigated reports of a suspicious vehicle at the adjacent Post Office, but that evacuation was also lifted. The two incidents are not related.
