Time to dial ten digits

If you live in southwest Indiana, you’ll need to start dialing 10 digits to make a local call this weekend.

Dialing the 812 area code before the seven-digit phone number becomes mandatory this Saturday.

It’s part of what officials call the “overlaying” of a new 930 area code, which will be assigned to new phone numbers in the region in about a month.

The new code is needed because the region is running out of 812 phone numbers.

Officials say if you have phone numbers programmed without the 812 area code at the beginning, you’ll need to re-program your device.

The change was originally planned for last September, but the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission postponed it to this Saturday, February 7th.
