Governor Pence decides to terminate planned state-run news site

Indiana Governor Mike Pence is pulling letting go of plans for the controversial state-run news site, "Just IN."

The website alarmed journalists and free speech advocates across the state and the country when the Indianapolis Star first reported on it Monday.

"Just IN" was proposed to be a state-run news service to break news and have state officials write “stories” for the outlet.

But Governor Pence killed his administration’s plans for the site on Thursday.

He told WNIN News, during his visit to St. Mary’s Hospital promoting HIP 2.0, the website was originally well-intended, but got out of hand.

“My purpose in moving forward with that idea was I wanted to create a resource, not a news source," Pence said. "After reviewing the legitimate concerns that have been raised, I thought it was best to terminate the website."

Pence says instead, the office of information technology will partner with state agencies to post meeting notices and press releases in one web location for the media to access.
