Governor Mike Pence’s proposed budget includes $19.2 million for the Indiana University Medical School planned for Downtown Evansville, but officials say more money is needed.
The budget covers IU’s funding, but doesn’t include money for med school partners Ivy Tech and USI.
Ivy Tech is requesting nearly $23 million and USI wants more that $7 million.
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke tells Indiana Public Broadcasting that it’s up to the city to lobby the legislature to secure the rest of the funding. He also says the project could be done in phases, if necessary.
Winnecke met privately with Pence on Wednesday to push for med school funding. He calls Pence's budget plan a "good first step."
