Demonstrators march, police release statistics

Dozens of people braved cold December temperatures to demonstrate for justice in Downtown Evansville.

They marched in front of the Civic Center during the noon hour Wednesday, chanting "hands up, don't shoot" and "I can't breathe."

The protesters were calling attention to unarmed African-Americans killed by police in Ferguson Missouri, Cleveland, and New York City.

The demonstration was organized by a local Moral Mondays group and the Evansville branch of the NAACP.

It followed the release of statistics by the Evansville Police Department showing a disproportionate number of the city’s 911 calls, as well as gun-related incidents, have been in the department’s South Sector this year.

In a Facebook post, the department suggested it was releasing the information to dispel the belief from some residents that the South Sector was “being targeted for increased policing based on racial bias.”
