Sen. Eddie Melton (D-Gary) will announce this evening he’s running for governor.
Melton will officially announce his run in Gary, his hometown, after months of exploring a bid.
He will become the third Democrat to officially launch a gubernatorial campaign for 2020. Melton filed paperwork last week for his run to unseat incumbent Gov. Eric Holcomb (R-Ind.).
Melton will be joined at his official campaign launch by Republican State Superintendent Jennifer McCormick, fueling rumors she might eventually join his ticket as a lieutenant governor candidate. McCormick traveled the state with Melton this summer as part of his exploratory “listening” tour.
Melton has served in the state Senate since 2016. He’s a utility company manager and a former member of the State Board of Education.
His fellow Democrats running for governor are Woody Myers, a health care executive and former State Health Commissioner, and tech CEO Josh Owens.
