Scooter bill advances

A bill to tighten restrictions on scooters and mopeds is “scooting along” at the Indiana Statehouse.

Evansville Police spokesman Jason Cullum says the bill has passed the Senate Transportation Committee 8-1, and now moves to the full Senate. The measure passed the Indiana House earlier this month.

The bill would require operators of motorized scooters to register their vehicle with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and pass a traffic test. It would also prohibit scooter drivers from carrying passengers.

Cullum has called the bill a “good first step,” but he’d also like legislators to look at issues with insurance and operators who have lost their drivers licenses.
