Before the state of Indiana executed Jeffrey Weisheit early Thursday, the current Vanderburgh County prosecutor issued a statement opposing clemency for him. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Diana Moers acknowledged she was not in the prosecutor’s office when the crime occurred in 2010, but said the case is “still very alive in our community, to our first responders, to the courts, and in the halls of my office.”
A jury convicted Weisheit of tying up his girlfriend’s two children, five-year-old Caleb and eight-year-old Alyssa Lynch, and setting the house on fire.
Jurors also recommended the death penalty for Wesheit.
Moers points to the pain and grief felt by their mother Lisa Lynch—who not only lost her two children but also her home and belongings.
Department of Correction spokesperson Noelle Russell says the 50-year-old Weisheit died by lethal injection early Thursday morning at the state prison in Michigan City.
More: A spokeswoman for the Indiana Department of Correction said there were no issues with the execution.
