The Evansville Police Department’s drone response program is underway. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:
The EPD says its Drone as First Responder – or DFR -- program officially launched this week.
The department says it allows officers to launch a drone within seconds of a 9-1-1 call and quickly get eyes on a scene.
The new drone fleet also includes one designed for indoor use.
It can enter buildings, navigate confined spaces, and help officers to safely assess potentially dangerous environments before entering.
The EPD says the drones will be operated by trained pilots, providing an aerial view to help officers gauge a situation, coordinate resources and approach scenes more safely.
The department worked with Motorola Solutions to deploy the program, which includes a BRINC Responder drone and weatherproof docking station at the Civic Center Complex.
