Protests are planned across Indiana — including Evansville and Vincennes — against the state holding ICE detainees at Miami Correctional Facility

Thousands of Hoosiers are expected to protest across Indiana this weekend calling on Governor Braun to end ICE detentions at an Indiana prison. As WNIN’s John Gibson reports, events are planned in Evansville and Vincennes:

The Weekend of Public Witness will feature a protest at the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Blvd. in downtown Evansville from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

A day before, a protest is planned in front of the Knox County Courthouse from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday in Vincennes.

The Indiana Organizing Project says the state is holding about 800 ICE detainees at the Miami Correctional facility in Bunker Hill.

Two detainees died at the facility earlier this year.

Organizers say the detentions inflict devastating trauma on families and communities across the state.

The group also says Hoosiers reject the monetization of human suffering.

The state is paid to hold the detainees but with potentially high litigation costs, the group says it’s increasingly possible that the state will lose money.
