As the end of summer approaches, police agencies will step up patrols and conduct sobriety checkpoints. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Evansville Police Department says it’s once again partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, as part of the nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
Officers will work overtime starting this week through September 7th, to identify and stop motorists under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
EPD Sgt. Nick Winsett says the department is asking every driver to make responsible decisions.
He says a sober ride isn’t just the safest option it’s “the choice that saves lives.”
Preliminary data shows nearly 23-percent of Indiana’s traffic fatalities last year involved alcohol, and more than 41-percent involved drug impairment.
A recent sobriety checkpoint on Evansville’s West Side ended with five arrests.
