Authorities arrested five people during a sobriety checkpoint on Evansville’s West Side. WNIN’s John Gibson has the results:
The Evansville-Vanderburgh County Traffic Safety Partnership conducted Thursday night’s checkpoint on Fulton Avenue near Florida Street.
As usual, the location was not disclosed before the event.
The sheriff’s office says 78 vehicles were diverted into the checkpoint and officers arrested five individuals for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated.
Of those five arrests, four involved suspected drug impairment.
Officers also issued three misdemeanor citations, multiple traffic tickets, and written warnings.
The sheriff’s office says some drivers were offered alternate transportation if their breath alcohol concentration was approaching the legal limit.
Authorities say drivers who were not impaired and possessed a valid driver’s license were typically back on the road in less than 90 seconds.
Sheriff Noah Robinson says “We would much rather change someone’s behavior than arrest them. But some drivers still have not gotten the message about the dangers and penalties associated with drunken driving.”
