The next time you call 9-1-1, the first responder might be a drone. WNIN’s John Gibson explains:
The Evansville Police Department is launching a “Drone as First Responder” – or DFR -- program.
The EPD says for certain types of emergencies, the department will launch a drone from the Civic Center in Downtown Evansville within seconds of a 9-1-1 call.
The device will allow officers to get “eyes on a scene” in as few as 70 seconds.
The EPD says the drones will only be activated if certain criteria are met.
Police say they will be operated by trained pilots and will NOT be used for random or continued surveillance of a neighborhood, private property, or individual.
The department is working with Motorola Solutions to deploy the drone program.
