As the end of the school year and summer vacation season approach, police agencies are stepping up seatbelt enforcement. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute is once again partnering with State Police and local agencies to urge Hoosiers to buckle up as part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign.
Officers will work overtime to ensure drivers and passengers are using their seat belts and children are properly secured.
The high-visibility effort runs through the end of May.
The overtime patrols are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Indiana’s Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program – or CHIRP.
Officials say since 2021, the Hoosier State has seen a steady decline in fatalities with seat belt usage topping 94-percent in 2025.
The rate is above the national average of just over 91-percent in 2024.
