Vanderburgh County Commissioners and Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry are alerting the public to a scam. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:
Officials say scammers are targeting individuals and businesses involved in the Site Review process.
They say the crooks use publicly available information from Area Plan Commission filings to pose as representatives of the Commission.
The city and county say the communications often include invoices requesting payment of significant sums of money and may claim the payment is required to expedite the application process.
Officials are emphasizing those communications are not legitimate.
They say City and County officials will never request payment via wire transfer or ask individuals to send funds to expedite any application or review process.
Anyone who receives suspicious emails or payment requests is urged to verify the communication by contacting the City or County department they’re working with directly by phone.
