Evansville Police have cleared an officer of any wrongdoing in a fatal shooting. But as WNIN’s John Gibson reports, additional reviews will be conducted:
Evansville Police Chief Philip Smith says both an administrative review and a criminal investigation determined the officer did not violate any policies or procedures in the November shooting death of 58-year-old Everett Nunn.
"However, there is so much community interest in this case, I will still hand over the review and the findings of the review to the Evansville Police Merit Commission for their own independent review of the incident."
Smith also says the results of the probe will go to the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor:
"The prosecutor's office and the prosecutor's office alone determines whether the officer violated any criminal statute or violated any criminal code and if charges are warranted."
The officer fatally shot Nunn, while Nunn held a pipe that was shaped like a gun.
Police say the officer who fired the fatal shots had been told there was a gun in the home.
