Evansville Targeted for Heaviest Snow in Region

Bob Sonntag, a University South neighborhood resident shoveled Sunday morning — the calm before the storm. “I think the snow is too heavy for my backpack leaf blower that would work on light, fluffy snow," he said.

Forecasters say an approaching winter storm could drop 12-to-18 inches on the immediate Evansville area

Evansville appears to be in the bull’s eye for heavy snow this weekend. WNIN’s John Gibson has the latest:

National Weather Service Meteorologist Kate Hickford says the latest data shows a small band of heavy snow impacting the immediate Evansville area:

"Right now, models and ensembles are trending a little more northeast with that band, so it's going a little bit closer towards Evansville."

Hickford says Evansville could see 12-to-18 inches of the white stuff.

The single-day record for the city is 19.3 inches in December 2004. The total for that storm was 22.3 inches.

Hickford also says she can’t rule out sleet or freezing rain mixing with snow, especially south of Evansville:

"There may be a section in there where you're going to change over to sleet. Because that line, that nose of that warmer air, it could move farther north."

She says once the snow starts, road conditions will deteriorate:

"Be prepared to hunker down for a few days. Please be patient with the road crews. Please give them time to clear things out."

Most of the Tri-State is forecast to see 8-to-12 inches of snow, along with frigid temperatures and sub-zero wind chills through Tuesday.
