Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry is asking the Indiana legislature to change tax law to ensure cities can provide services

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry is calling on the Indiana General Assembly to change a major bill passed last year. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Terry says she wants “results over noise” at the Statehouse with the top priority changing last year’s Senate Bill 1.

The Democratic mayor says she supports property tax relief for homeowners but the changes to local income tax rules could “force service cuts beginning in 2027.”

Working alongside the Association of Indiana Municipalities, Terry urges state leaders to align income tax collections with the services cities provide; lower the threshold for cities and towns to opt into county income taxes; and remove the requirement that cities re-approve unchanged local income taxes every year.

She says the changes would preserve the intent of Senate Bill 1 while providing cities stability to fund needed services, like public safety.

A major public safety change starts this July in Evansville when the Fire Department takes over emergency ambulance service.
