Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry is calling for patience as police investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Mayor Terry says anytime there’s an officer-involved shooting, it’s a “tough time for our city.”
She’s asking the community to allow the EPD to fully investigate the death of 58-year-old Everett Nunn:
"I know emotions are high and I also know many are seeking answers. This remains an active investigation and we must allow the process to move forward."
Terry promises a transparent probe:
"My administration will continue to be honest and transparent throughout this process."
An EPD officer fatally shot Nunn, who was black, while Nunn held a pipe that was shaped like a gun.
It happened as officers were responding to a report of a father-son fight inside Nunn’s home on E. Louisiana Street Saturday night.
Police say the officer who fired the fatal shots had been told there was a gun in the home.
The officer has not been identified. He’s been placed on paid administrative leave.
Terry is Evansville’s first black mayor. Police Chief Philip Smith is the city’s second black chief.
