The Vanderburgh County Sheriff says a program that helps inmates recover from addiction will continue. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Sheriff’s Office partnered with Evansville Recovery Alliance in September 2023 to provide naloxone to individuals leaving the jail.
The inhaled drug, known by the commercial name Narcan, is used to reverse an opioid overdose
Sheriff Noah Robinson says everyone released from the jail is offered two doses of Narcan and a digital instruction manual for community assets to help them in recovery.
Robinson says more than 96-hundred inmates have been released from the jail in the past two years and about a quarter of them left the with Narcan in hand.
The sheriff says the potential life-saving initiative will continue through a new partnership with Overdose Lifeline, Incorporated.
Robinson says the support and resources play a vital role in sustaining the program and strengthening the fight against the opioid epidemic.
