Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Vanderburgh County Jail. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:
The Sheriff’s Office says an incident occurred Saturday, Sept. 5th inside a booking area that holds new arrestees.
Within minutes of being placed into the cell, the inmate improvised a choking device and applied it to their neck -- without the other cell occupants noticing.
Jail officers and on-site medical staff responded and initiated life-saving measures, including CPR and a defibrillator.
The sheriff’s office says the inmate was taken to a hospital, admitted to intensive care, and removed from life support on Friday.
Indiana State Police is leading the investigation with the assistance of the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office.
The inmate’s name has not been released yet.
