You have an opportunity to learn how to prevent fraud against the elderly. WNIN’s John Gibson has a preview:
The AARP of Evansville will conduct a seminar next week featuring local law enforcement officers.
Rosie Weatherwax is a volunteer with the group. She recalls a scam attempt against an elderly family member:
"I know my mother-in-law got the phone call 'Grandma, I'm in jail in Mexico." And we could not take her down off the edge until she was able to talk to him and find out it was a scam."
Weatherwax says education is the key:
"Don't give credit card numbers, don't believe that there's a Mercedes waiting for you at the airport, just stop and pause and think of it, talk to somebody in your family before you do it."
Weatherwax suggests attendees will learn how to be skeptical:
"Is this someone I know, is this someone I trust, didn't someone tell me not to give out my social security number? All of those things that help the seniors in particular know what to and what not to do."
The free seminar is Thursday, September 11th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ivy Tech in Evansville.
Registration is required here.
